Where to buy cheaper

Tips, not prices: none of these is in any total on this site. Store policies as the stores' own pages described them on Oct 8, 2026.

Menards 11% rebate
Menards runs an 11% rebate at times, not every week, so check before you buy. It is a mail-in rebate: you mail the form with the receipt, and the money comes back as a Menards rebate credit check, which Menards says is valid on future in-store purchases only, not on menards.com. Menards says most rebates are processed within 6 to 8 weeks. So it is store credit for your next trip, not cash off this one.
Lowe's Lowest Price Guarantee
Lowe's says that if you find a current lower price on an identical in-stock item from another local retailer, it will match it once an associate checks the website, ad, printout or photo you show, delivery cost included. Useful when one store has the hardware cloth or the lumber for less and the other is closer.
A lumber yard for the frame
A local lumber yard is worth a quote for the framing lumber, the treated posts and the sheet goods, and it may deliver the whole frame at once. We did not price one, so we cannot say by how much it beats the home center. Ask for the same grades the list names.
Buy the mesh by the roll that fits
Hardware cloth is the biggest line after the lumber, and the price per foot changes a lot between roll lengths: on the day we read them, a 3 ft x 100 ft roll cost about the same as a 3 ft x 50 ft roll. If your coop needs more than half a long roll, price the long one.

How the prices were read

On Oct 8, 2026 we read the shelf price of one product per line, the first card of the right size and kind with stock at the store, at Home Depot, Hamilton Mill store, Oct 8, 2026; Lowe's, Atlanta-Edgewood store, Oct 8, 2026; Home Depot, Bronx Terminal store, Sep 30, 2026. The framing lumber, sheet goods and the run's roof panels come from Home Depot; the mesh, roofing, connectors and hardware from Lowe's; nails, hurricane ties and adhesive from an earlier Home Depot read. Each line in the calculator names its product and model. Prices change by store and by week, so the boxes are there for yours.

The quantities are the designer's: lumber packed onto the board lengths the store sells, plywood parts laid out on whole sheets, hardware cloth on the roll widths and lengths the store lists. Questions people ask

Materials for our plans run from $1,973 for a 4x4 coop for 2 hens to $6,633 for a 12x12 walk-in for 32, each with its run, at shelf prices we read on Oct 8, 2026. A 4x8 for six hens comes to $2,754.24: $1,766.06 for the coop and $988.18 for the run.

In the 4x8 plan the lumber is the largest group at $1,016.38, about 37% of the total, then lumber at $707.89. The hardware cloth alone is $363.06, because the plan wraps the run walls, the floor and every vent in 1/2 in mesh.

No, but it is a large part of it. The run adds $988.18 to the 4x8 plan and $1,762.02 to the 10x10: posts, rails, hardware cloth, the apron, a door and a roof. A run with a mesh roof or an open top costs less; pick it in the calculator to see by how much.

Every line of our standard plans has a price. A few options do not yet: the welded wire of the cheaper run walls in widths other than 3 ft, the only size we found on a store shelf, and metal roof panels longer than 12 ft. We do not guess those; type your store's price into the line and the total includes it.
