Build it in this order

  1. 01 Legs and floor. Set 16 legs on pavers, square the beams, screw hardware cloth under the joists, then glue and screw the floor.
  2. 02 Walls. Frame each wall flat, raise it, and check plumb and both diagonals.
  3. 03 Roof. Cut one pattern rafter at 6/12, test it, then set the rest with a hurricane tie at every plate.
  4. 04 Siding, doors and vents. Side the walls, hang the doors on two-step latches and screen every vent with hardware cloth.
  5. 05 Nests, roosts and pop door. Hang the nest boxes, drop the roost bars into their cradles and fit the pop door in its guides.
  6. 06 The run. Set the posts, add the rails, wrap the mesh outside the posts, then the roof and the apron.

The guide to building a chicken coop walks through each step. The builder's plan for this coop, every wall framed and every cut listed, run included, will be $29 once.

Questions people ask

A 10x10 coop has 88.7 sq ft inside its walls, enough for 22 standard hens with a run at 4 sq ft each. Without a run, at 10 sq ft each, it holds 8.

For 22 standard hens the run needs 220 sq ft at 10 sq ft per hen, and the plan draws it 10' x 22' (220 sq ft), 72" at the low end and 105" at the coop. Its walls are hardware cloth the full height, with a 24 in apron against digging and a covered roof against hawks.

It is a walk-in coop: 6' walls, a 30 in person door and the floor 24" off the ground on 4x4 legs. You stand inside to clean, collect eggs and fill the feeder, and the run sits along the pop door side.
