Questions people ask
With a run, a 4x4 coop holds 2 standard hens, 5 bantams or 2 large-breed hens at our defaults (4 sq ft per standard hen inside, after Virginia Tech and Cooperative Extension). Kept shut in all day, the same floor holds only 1 standard hen, because confined birds need about 10 sq ft each.
For 2 standard hens the run needs 20 sq ft at 10 sq ft per hen, and the plan draws it 4' x 6' (24 sq ft), 72" at the low end and 81" at the coop. Its walls are hardware cloth the full height, with a 24 in apron against digging and a covered roof against hawks.
It is a raised hutch: 3' walls on a floor 24" off the ground, cleaned through a front clean-out door, with the eggs collected through the nest box lid outside. Hens shelter in the shade under the floor.
